Accurate Answers, Better Outcomes

Diagnostics are the key to understanding what’s happening inside your animal’s body. Our clinic combines experienced clinical assessment with imaging and laboratory tools to confirm or rule out disease, monitor chronic conditions, and guide surgical or medical plans. In a mixed practice, this capability supports everything from routine pet care to complex large animal health decisions.

Diagnostics & Imaging FAQs

From routine screening to urgent investigations, diagnostics help us make informed recommendations. These FAQs explain what tests we use and why they matter.

What diagnostic tests do you offer in-house?

Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre provides in-house blood testing using an IDEXX machine, as well as routine pathology such as CBC and chemistry panels. We also perform urinalysis, faecal testing, cytology, and pregnancy diagnosis, supported by imaging when needed.

Do you offer X-rays and ultrasound?

Yes. We use digital radiographs for musculoskeletal injuries, chest and abdominal assessment, dental cases, and large animal evaluations. Ultrasound helps assess soft tissues, pregnancies, abdominal organs, and some reproductive conditions, especially in mixed-practice work.

When should my pet or animal have diagnostic testing?

Testing may be recommended for illness signs like vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, lethargy, weight loss, lameness, or behavioural change. It’s also useful before anaesthesia, for senior screening, and to monitor long-term conditions. Our veterinarians will explain which tests are most relevant and why.

What is an echocardiogram and when is it needed?

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. We offer basic echocardiograms to evaluate heart function before referral, especially when a murmur or cardiac concern is identified. Results help us decide if surgery or treatment is safe to proceed and whether specialist input is needed.

Diagnostics in a True Mixed Practice

Our diagnostic approach is built on practical problem-solving. We combine history, physical exams, and targeted testing to avoid unnecessary procedures while still getting clear answers. Because we see a wide range of species, we’re able to adapt diagnostic plans to the animal in front of us and the context we’re working within.
