Our History
Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre has a proud history of serving the local community for over 70 years. The practice was originally founded in the early 1950s by Alan Chittick. At the time, the region was home to more than 300 registered dairies, and cattle work formed the backbone of the veterinary services.
In 1982, Bill Beresford joined Alan soon after graduating, becoming a partner in 1988. The practice evolved steadily over the years as the number of dairies declined. By the time Charlie Carter joined in 2006—and became a partner just two years later—only 12 dairies remained in the area. As a result, the small animal side of the practice grew significantly, but Beresford and Carter Vets remained a truly mixed practice, continuing to provide expert care to dairy and beef cattle, horses, alpacas, sheep, and goats.
In December 2011, the name Beresford and Carter Vets no longer reflected the scope and vision of the practice, so we rebranded as Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre. In July 2013, we moved into a new, purpose-built hospital at 48 Berrima Road in Moss Vale. This modern facility enabled us to expand our services and deliver the highest standard of veterinary care to our clients and their animals.
After 37 years of dedicated service, Bill Beresford retired in 2019. In March 2025, Charlie Carter became the sole owner of the practice. Charlie is passionate about both the future of Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre and the continued growth of our exceptional team.
Today, we remain committed to providing compassionate, professional veterinary care for all animals—large and small. We are proud to continue supporting and contributing to the Southern Highlands community.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
If you have any feedback or suggestions on how we can improve our services, we’d love to hear from you.

Testimonials

A huge thank you so much to Charlie and all his team for their ongoing professional compassionate and exemplary care of our dog Rudy who has required complicated surgery (from which he recovered well thanks to the care provided) as well general vet care. We would not hesitate to recommend the clinic.
We had a great experience bringing our new addition to the family, our young puppy Lottie to see the team at Southern Highlands Vets. The team was incredibly professional, Lottie was so calm and enjoyed all the attention from Dr Eliza. We cannot recommend them enough.
Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre after hours service saved my beautiful cat Dorian after was attacked by a dog in our yard. The team went over and above to treat his wounds after hours and multiple appointments per week. There were times in his long recovery we thought he wouldn’t make it, but the Vets always acted quickly, always listened, and always knew what to do. The Vets and the vet nurses explained everything clearly, gave us clear decisions to make and uncomplicated direction that helped us so much a long the way.
After multiple surgeries to the wound and a tooth extraction, an overnight stay on fluids, and multiple rounds of antibiotics…2 months later, my little Dorian is back to his old self with a couple of cool battle scars. I can’t tell you what it means to me that they saved his life and I can’t recommend Angus, Max and Judi and the vet nurse team there enough if you need people you can trust with your little furry companion in a crisis. So much respect for the good work that they do day to day.
SHVC is a professional and well run surgery. I’ve taken my bulldog “Butch” there since he was a puppy for all his shots, meds and any other sensitive ailments bulldogs always have from season to season. The staff at SHVC are always courteous and personable, and have acted in the best way possible for Butch’s health.
Charlie and his team at Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre have been looking after our animals for many years, large and small. From emergency calvings and collapsing cows, where a quick response is needed and is often afterhours, to the less urgent lame or sick cow, or routine preg testing and bull exams…. they show up with expertise and a smile….. even splinting the odd calf ‘s broken leg with great success!
For close to 15 years, our two dogs were cared for and made well again, and we are confident our new puppy, who just loves her visits to the vets, is in good hands.
The team are professional, competent, compassionate and most of all cheerful – even at the back end of a cow in the rain and mud! We’re very happy with Southern Highland Vets.
